Top 7 Power BI Custom Visuals for Internal Audit
Author: Katharina Laumann, PR Manager and Editor at PAF
The use of Process Mining in Internal Audit opens up previously untapped possibilities for auditors. Full population testing becomes possible quickly and easily and creates 100% transparency, so that auditors work with facts instead of assumptions and know exactly which questions they need to ask.

Using Microsoft Power BI as the foundation for Process Mining makes sense for any organization that uses the digital workplace Microsoft 365. Especially because a dedicated community has formed around Power BI, which provides visuals for every conceivable purpose. These visuals allow auditors to get to know their data in a unique way, tailored exactly to audit needs and questions. Below - in no particular order - we present our top picks:
PAFnow Process Explorer
The PAFnow Process Explorer automatically visualizes any business process in a process flow. This helps auditors to evaluate and understand as-is processes, including all paths and branches.
Additionally, the PAFnow Process Explorer allows them to filter by individual process steps or paths to gain deeper insights. There are a variety of filtering options to meet specific requirements.
This way, auditors not only analyze individual KPIs but get a complete view of the process, identify outliers and can quickly navigate to critical cases with extreme values.
By combining the PAFnow Process Explorer with Visio, it is very easy to check the compliance of processes.
Visio is used to define an ideal process model. This is compared with reality. For example, it is possible to examine how each step in the process model is executed and which resources are involved.
It is also possible to identify deviations in the process that run contrary to the desired sequence and the segregation of duties.
Variant View enables the comparison of all or selected process variants. Unique paths and critical points can be identified at a glance and with a single click.
With the Decomposition Tree, cases can be broken down by attributes of interest. For example, it is possible to compare how different departments handle cases or which resource is involved in the most cases, the most steps or the largest amounts of money.
The world map allows auditors to see the compliance rate of certain criteria based on location/region. This is especially helpful when there are multiple locations and new guidelines are being introduced.
Top countries can be ranked by KPIs for example countries that best meet certain SOD / Sequence compliance criteria (in our example indicated by a gradient from red to green).
PAFnow Segregation of Duty / Conformance Check
This visual breaks down each case into steps that are color-coded by executing resource. This makes SoD violations visible immediately. For example, it can be seen at a glance if a single resource has executed all approval levels or if the same resource is handling both the request and the approval.
Power Automate Visual
The Power Automate Visual allows auditors to share insights in a targeted manner and also allows continuous monitoring of set parameters:
In the first case, send case data as an easy-to-use visual or, for example, send an email to the responsible entity that can investigate and fix potential segregation of duties issues.
In the second case, one connects the visual to the backend and thus receives automatic messages when specifically defined indicators are triggered (for example when a KPI has been exceeded).
